| Short description: | The course is focused on different types of organic pollutants in soil, with particular emphasis on their anthropogenic sources and the effects of their impact on soil. It involves the assessment of soil pollution (selection of appropriate methods for the collection, extraction and identification of various classes of organic contaminants in soil samples, regulations defining their maximum residue levels in soils). |
| Full description: | The aim of the course is to familiarize student with the most common types of organic pollutants in the soil environment. It systematizes persistent organic compounds in soil, types of their interactions and the latest trends in methodology for the extraction and determination of their residues in soil. These include pesticides, polycyclic and monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated bi- and triphenyls, dioxins and furans, and petroleum products. |

| Learning outcomes: | Knowledge Student has extended knowledge about the chosen environmental compartment and the processes occurring in it, according to the studies specialty. Student knows the basic methods of examination utilized in environmental studies. Student knows the ways and methods of antropopression assessment in chosen environmental compartments according to the studies specialty. Skills Student properly choses the examination method to assess the environmental condition. Student describes and assesses the condition of chosen environmental compartments based on the observations and field studies. Student can obtain the information from the literature and other sources, is able to integrate the data, interpret it and critically assess. Social competences Student respects the principles of intellectual property protection and copyright; shows a critical attitude towards plagiarism. Student works cooperatively and fulfill the duties accordingly to the role in the team. |
